Iranian Legislators Voice Support for Rouhani’s Stances at UN
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Days after Iran's President Hassan Rouhani addressed the UN General Assembly, 230 lawmakers issued a communique on Tuesday to pull their weight behind the stances he announced at the UN.
“We, members of Iran's parliament, appreciate the resolute and wise stands adopted by the esteemed President Hassan Rouhani at the UN, as they were in conformity with the values and ideals emphasized by the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, and the Supreme Leader, and presented a picture of a mighty, peace-loving Iran that favors dialogue and interactions…,” read part of the communiqué.
The MPs also expressed hope that the western countries would "remove the unjustly imposed sanctions" on Iran and start to work with the Islamic Republic to resolve regional and international conflicts and tensions.
President Hassan Rouhani declared that "peace is within reach" in a hotly anticipated speech at the United Nations in which he offered immediate negotiations aimed at removing any "reasonable concerns" over Iran's peaceful nuclear program.
Rouhani argued that in return, Iran wanted the international community to recognize the Iranian nation’s natural rights, including those in nuclear field.
The Iranian president also blasted international sanctions against Iran in his address, comparing them to the widely criticized punitive measures against Iraq while Saddam Hussein was in power.
"These sanctions are violent, blind and illegal," he told the UN General Assembly, adding that normal people, not political elites, ended up suffering because of them.
