President Rouhani Congratulates Regional States on Nowruz

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani sent separate congratulatory messages to the heads of 9 regional countries on the occasion of Nowruz, the first day of spring, also the oldest and the most cherished festival in the Persian calendar.

On Thursday night and after beginning of the new Iranian year concurrent with the ancient festivities of Nowruz, President Rouhani felicitated Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkey on the ancient and globally renowned event.

He expressed the hope that Nowruz would bring about “justice, morality and fraternity on the basis of the principal tenets of the divine religions and cultures of diverse nations, as well as sustainable peace and stability in the world.”

From time immemorial, Iranians from all walks of life enthusiastically celebrate Nowruz, irrespective of their age, language, gender, race, ethnicity, or social status.

Nowruz represents much of what Iranian character, history, politics, and religion are all about. For centuries, Persians have applied the Nowruz spirit to every dark challenge that has come their way. This spirit has made Nowruz far more than just a new year celebration over the course of history.

The festivities marking Nowruz is also spreading across the world.

In 2010, the UN General Assembly established March 21 as the International Day of Nowruz. The UN also celebrates the International Day of Happiness, which falls on March 20 every year.

In 2009, Nowruz was officially added to UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
