Iran Calls for Close Ties with World Bank

TEHRAN (Tasnim) — Iran's Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Ali Tayyebnia called for close cooperation between Tehran and the World Bank, saying that promotion of ties with the international body sets a high priority for the Iranian government.

Tayyebnia made the remarks during a meeting with Inger Andersen, the World Bank's vice-president for the Middle East and North Africa on the sidelines of the 2014 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG) in Washington.

He also said that Iran is willing to receive technical assistance from the World Bank in various projects, including environment, air pollution, road safety and natural disaster management.

Having close ties with international bodies, including the World Bank is a high priority of the Iranian government, the minister said.

Tayyebnia, heading a high-ranking delegation of Iranian economic officials, paid a visit to Washington D.C. to participate in the 2014 Spring Meetings of the IMF and WBG, which were held from April 9 to 12.

Each spring, thousands of government officials, journalists, civil society organizations, and invited participants from the academic and private sectors, gather in Washington D.C. for the Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group.

The agenda of the meetings include various issues such as economic diversification in natural resource-based economies, subsidies, provision of housing for low-income people, among others.
