Iranian Commander: Research Key to Military Self-Sufficiency

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian commander said the country's Army Ground Force attaches great significance to research and development in a bid to attain self-sufficiency in the military sphere.

“The issue of research and self-sufficiency is very important and considerable,” Commander of the Iranian Army Ground Force Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said on Sunday, adding that the army feels duty-bound to sponsor scientific research to attain self-sufficiency.

Speaking to reporters in a ceremony held to unveil the latest achievements of the ground forces here in Tehran, the commander made clear that the Ground Force tries to forge close bonds with the academic centers as part of efforts to employ cutting edge technologies in the military arena.

During the ceremony, Brigadier General Pourdastan officially unveiled a state-of-the-art military armor that uses liquid armor technology.

The new product would be used in manufacturing military tanks, personnel carriers and bulletproof vests.

The commander had announced earlier that utilizing ‘liquid armor’ technology has brought about a revolution in the country’s defense industry.

“We managed to reduce the weight of bulletproof vests to one tenth” by using the liquid armor technology, Pourdastan said on April 15.

Earlier in February, Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan unveiled a high-tech composite armor for the military equipment.

The high-tech armor enjoys a unique type of yarns in its structure and has been manufactured on the basis of shear-thickening fluid (STF) technology, enabling the product to behave like a solid when it encounters mechanical stress.

The home-made armor is even resistant to armor-piercing projectiles with steel core, and also meets the global standards of the military equipment.

Utilizing the new product will decrease by 76% the weight of the structures that are installed on the tanks, armored personnel carriers and other military vehicles.
