Iran's National Football Team Departs for Brazil

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Iranian national football team (also known as Team Melli) flew to Brazil early Tuesday to participate in the 2014 World Cup.

The Iranian delegation attended on Monday in a farewell ceremony held at the 12000-seat hall of the Azadi Sports Complex, west of Tehran.

Iran will take part in the prestigious event for the fourth time.

Iran's first appearance in the competitions came in Argentina in 1978 and the team did not qualify again until 1998, where it earned its only tournament victory against the US.

A third appearance saw the side qualify for Germany in 2006, where the team lost to Mexico and Portugal and drew with Angola.

Iran will play Trinidad and Tobago on June 8 in its pre-World Cup warm weather training camp in Brazil.

Team Melli has been drawn in Group F along with Nigeria, Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Asian powerhouse will play Nigeria in Curitiba in their opening match on June 16.

Iran will face Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 21 and June 25, respectively.
