Iran Hopes for Better Human Rights Situation in World
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A senior Iranian judiciary official congratulated the United Nations' new High Commissioner for Human Rights for his appointment, expressing the hope for the promotion of human rights values all over the world.
Secretary General of Iran's High Council for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani on Friday congratulated Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein, who will assume the post as the next UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In a letter to the newly-appointed UN official, Larijani noted that the appointment of a first-ever Asian national for the highest-ranking human rights post at the UN signifies “the great capabilities available in Asia and in the Islamic world”.
Larijani also hoped that during Zeid’s tenure, people would experience an increased status of human rights all over the world “without any discrimination and with respect for diversity of cultures and civilizations.”
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, following approval by the General Assembly, has appointed Prince Zeid of Jordan as the next High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The Jordanian diplomat will succeed Navi Pillay of South Africa.
Since 2010 and previously from 2000 to 2007, Prince Zeid has served as Jordan’s permanent representative to the UN in New York. He was also Jordan’s ambassador to the US and Mexico from 2007 to 2010 and deputy permanent representative to the UN from 1996 to 2000, according to the UN official website.
