Chances Better Than Ever for Nuclear Deal: Former British Envoy to Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Former British ambassador to Iran said the chances were better than ever that there would be a final nuclear deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany.

Richard Dalton, however, added that hard work on the politics had to be done in Washington and Tehran.

Even though Iran and the sextet remain far apart on key issues, some progress has been made, The Chatham House think-tank analyst told AFP.

On Friday, Iran and the world powers agreed to keep holding talks on Tehran’s nuclear program for four more months after missing a July 20 deadline to reach a comprehensive agreement.

After nearly three weeks of intensive diplomatic negotiations in the Austrian capital of Vienna that began on July 2, the two sides decided to extend the nuclear talks until November 24 in the hope of clinching a final deal to resolve the decade-long standoff on Iran’s nuclear energy program.

During the four-month extension of the talks, which begins on July 21, Iran will have access to $2.8 billion of its frozen assets and will convert its stockpile of 20-percent enriched uranium to fuel for a research reactor in Tehran.
