WHO Calls for Humanitarian Corridor to Evacuate Gaza Wounded

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The World Health Organization (WHO) called on Friday for a humanitarian corridor to be set up in Gaza to allow aid workers to evacuate the wounded and bring in life-saving medicines.

In a statement, the UN health agency said that four hospitals, including al Aqsa hospital in the coastal strip, had been damaged in the conflict that began on July 8 when Israel launched air strikes, followed by a ground invasion, Reuters reported.

"WHO calls for the creation of a humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of the injured, as well as for the supply of life-saving medicines. The humanitarian corridor should extend to protect the safe passage of patients to access crossing points and exit outside the Gaza Strip for medical care."

This comes as the 18-day Israeli offensive on Gaza has so far claimed the lives of over 800 Palestinians, including scores of innocent children, according to the health ministry in Gaza.

More than 5,200 others have been reported injured.

Israel claims that its large-scale strikes on the besieged Gaza Strip are targeting Hamas fighters and a network of underground tunnels but most of those killed in Gaza were civilians, including scores of children.

At least 15 Palestinians died after a UN facility in Gaza sheltering displaced people was hit by Israel on Thursday.
