MP: Israel Afraid of Palestinians’ Unity

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Unity among the people of Palestine is the biggest source of concern for Israel, an Iranian lawmaker underlined.

“The usurper Zionist regime (of Israel) deems unity of the Muslim Palestinian people a big threat to itself,” Qassem Azizi told the Tasnim News Agency on Friday.

“That is why it (Israel) employs all its capabilities to disrupt unity and vigilance of Muslims,” he explained.

His comments came after many were surprised by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s support for the Gaza Strip, which has come under Israel’s heavy military attacks for more than three weeks.

Abbas said on Wednesday Gaza has become a "humanitarian disaster area" and urged the UN and international aid agencies to assume responsibility for meeting the needs of the Palestinians in the battered enclave.

On July 8, Israel launched air strikes on the Gaza Strip. After 10 days of bombardment of the enclave from the air and sea, the Israeli forces started a ground operation in the Gaza Strip.

The death toll from 25 days of Israeli onslaught on Gaza has reached around 1,500 and over 8,300 have been injured.

In the meantime, Israel and the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas agreed to an unconditional 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire starting on Friday.
