Iranian UN Envoy: World Shocked by UNSC Inaction on Israeli Atrocities

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations said the entire world is shocked by the UN Security Council’s "indifference" to Israel’s ongoing attacks against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

“Unfortunately countries that claim to respect democracy and the will of people, have ignored calls by the majority of the international community for firm action against the Zionist regime,” said Gholam Hossein Dehqani.

He underlined that based on the UN charter, the Security Council is tasked with maintaining international peace and security but there are double standards in the UNSC especially among three Western permanent members of the council who exercise their influence in many cases.

Dehqani added that numerous resolutions were passed and many meetings are held every month on Syria but despite the critical situation in Gaza, only four meetings have been held and two mild statements have been issued which have not directly targeted Israel.

The Iranian UN envoy pointed to UNSC’s failure to act on the issue despite global efforts to stop the Israeli violence and said, “The Committee of Ambassadors of the Non-Aligned Movement Countries have held four meetings in the past twenty-five days and issued three statements, calling on the UNSC to immediately stop Israeli atrocities.”

On July 8, Israel launched air strikes on the Gaza Strip. After 10 days of bombardment of the enclave from the air and sea, the Israeli forces started a ground operation in the Gaza Strip.

Over 1,600 Palestinians have been killed and more than 8,800 have been wounded in the 26-day Israeli onslaught on the besieged enclave.
