Iran Wants Israel Prosecuted for Gaza Crimes
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian minster said the Israeli regime should stand trial at the international courts for the atrocities it has committed against people of Palestine, particularly those in the Gaza Strip.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran calls for the dispatch of an investigation team to Gaza to assess the degree of such a humanitarian catastrophe and for the prosecution of the Zionist regime (of Israel) at the international courts,” Iran’s Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ali Jannati said in an address to the executive committee meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah on Tuesday.
He also renewed Iran’s support for “unity among the Palestinian groups and their battle against the occupying regime” of Israel.
The Iranian minister noted that expectations are high for the OIC’s effectual measures to alleviate the pains of Palestinians suffering from Israeli attacks.
The executive committee of the OIC held a meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss the latest developments in Gaza and repercussions of the Israeli attacks as well as the possible ways of countering them at the regional and international forums.
On July 8, Israel launched air strikes on Gaza. After 10 days of bombardment of the enclave from the air and sea, the Israeli forces started a ground operation in densely populated territory.
Medical sources in the Gaza Strip say more than 1,900 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed, with some 10,000 people wounded and as many as 3,000 Palestinian homes have been destroyed or damaged.
More than a quarter of the impoverished enclave's 1.8 million residents have been also displaced by more than a month of bloodshed by the Israeli forces.
