Iran: Failure of Nuclear Talks No Catastrophe
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s top nuclear negotiator said no catastrophe would happen if the nuclear negotiations fail between Iran and the Group 5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany).
“The Geneva deal has provided an opportunity for us to reach a final deal but no catastrophe will happen if we don’t come to final agreement”, said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi.
Araqchi expressed the hope that Iran and the sextet could bring their views closer in September, when the two sides are supposed to hold meetings in New York, adding that the Western countries should leave aside their excessive demands.
The two sides clinched a landmark interim deal in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 23, 2013. The agreement took effect on January 20 and expired six months later on July 20.
In July, the two sides agreed on the extension of their discussions until November 24 in an effort to achieve a permanent nuclear deal.
