US Supports Iran’s “Constructive Role” in Iraq

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - US State Department said Washington supports Iran’s constructive role in leading Iraq’s political development.

The US State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said during her press conference that if Iran can play a constructive role in leading its western neighbor’s political process, her country would definitely support such role.

The spokesperson declined to answer whether Washington needs military assistance for attacking the terrorist group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Meanwhile, she noted that dealing with the ISIL threat was an international issue which has concerned many countries.

In early June, following its large-scale offensives in Iraq, ISIL seized control of most parts of Mosul, the second most populous city in Iraq and its surrounding Nineveh province.

The ISIL is a militant group that claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.

In addition to attacks on government and military targets, the group has claimed responsibility for attacks that have killed thousands of Iraqi civilians.

Since the security crisis flared up in Iraq, Iranian officials have always reiterated that the Islamic Republic would not interfere in Iraq’s internal affairs but have pledged any necessary logistical support or consultations.

Iranian politicians have reiterated that terrorism is a common threat to all regional countries and is not an ethnic or sectarian strife.
