Air Defense Ready to Repel All Types of Aerial Threats: Iranian Commander

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A local commander of Iran’s Air Defense said any aircraft belonging to enemies is deemed a threat and will definitely be targeted if tracked over the country’s airspace.

“We give a warning to the enemy’s aircraft before entering the Islamic Republic’s airspace, and deem any kind of intruding drones or planes of enemy a threat, and shoot it down immediately in case of entry (into Iran),” Colonel Mahmoud Ahmadi, commander of Iran’s southwestern Air Defense zone, said at a press conference on Friday.

His comments came after the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on August 24 tracked and shot down a radar-evading stealth Israeli drone which was intending to penetrate the airspace over Natanz nuclear zone.

The invading “Hermes” aircraft was intercepted by a surface-to-air missile.

Meanwhile, Commander of Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili has also unveiled plans to increase the number of Iran’s air defense sites from the current 3,600 to 5,000.

Iran has in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of military equipment, including the air defense systems that use cutting edge technologies.

Tehran has repeatedly stated that its military might is defensive in nature and poses no threat to other countries.
