Zarif in Rome for High-Profile Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Italy’s capital Rome on Wednesday morning to discuss a range of issues with his Italian counterpart.

The top Iranian diplomat’s one-day trip takes place at the invitation of Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini.

The two ministers will reportedly discuss the latest status of negotiations between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program and the most recent regional and international developments.

Zarif started a three-leg tour of Europe on Monday which took him to Belgium and Luxembourg earlier.

This is Zarif’s second visit to Italy in 10 months. On November 19, he paid an official visit to Rome and met with former Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino.

The new Italian foreign minister, Mogherini, is also the incoming European Union foreign policy chief.

She succeeds Catherine Ashton, who still coordinates diplomacy with Iran on behalf of the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3).

Iran and the six nations are in talks to reach a final agreement over Tehran’s nuclear energy program and the removal of unjustified sanctions against Iran.
