US Obstructing Final Iran Nuclear Deal: MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian lawmaker slammed the US as the main obstacle to achievement of a long-awaited agreement on Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities.

“There are stumbling blocks to the agreement, all of which stem from Americans’ obstructionism,” member of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Seyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini told the Tasnim News Agency.

The legislator was referring to a series of new sanctions imposed on Iran by the US. Last month, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on over 25 Iranian individuals and companies, including shipping firms, oil companies, airlines and six banks.

Hosseini said the new sanctions revealed that the US does not feel bound to honor any commitment, including the Geneva deal, struck between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council Members plus Germany) in 2013.

“Americans do not honor the Geneva deal. This is a big challenge, because the US has reneged the deal,” the MP added.

The Geneva deal, signed in November 2013, was indeed an agreement for the strengthening of mutual confidence between Iran and six world powers and was designed to pave the way for a permanent, comprehensive accord to settle a decade-long standoff on Iran’s nuclear activities.

Based on the interim deal, the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and to impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran's decision to freeze parts of its nuclear activities.
