Iran’s Komeil Ghasemi Seizes Silver in World Wrestling Championships

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Komeil Ghasemi of Iran claimed a silver medal at the 2014 World Wrestling Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Monday.

The 125kg freestyle wrestler lost to Turkey’s Taha Akgul 4-3 in the final match.

Ghasemi beat Oleksandr Khotsianivskyi from Ukraine 4-0 and then defeated Chinese Deng Zhiwei 7-2 in round of 16.

In the quarter-final round, Ghasemi beat Uzbekistan’s Kurban Kurbanov 7-0. He beat Russian Khadzhimurat Gatsalov 5-4 and advanced to the final, where the 2012 Olympic Games bronze medalist lost to his Turkish rival. 

Iran has yet won a gold medal in the 125kg category since 1989, where late Alireza Soleymani won a gold medal in world championships in Martigny, Switzerland.

The 2014 World Wrestling Championships started on September 8 in Tashkent, and will finish on September 14.
