US Campaign against ISIL Aimed at Protecting Israel: MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian lawmaker described Washington’s bid to build global support for the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group as a “political game” whose objective is to safeguard Israel.

The US seeks to create a “security shield” for Israel and to weaken the Syrian government by forming the coalition against the ISIL, Ebrahim Aqamohammadi, a member of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission told the Tasnim News Agency on Sunday.

Another objective behind the US decision to build regional support for military action on the ISIL militants is to restore trust of people in the region, he explained.

“They (Americans) want to take advantage of the regional countries’ capabilities to create a security barrier for the Zionist regime (of Israel) and also to weaken the axis of (anti-Israel) resistance” Aqamohammadi said of the so-called anti-ISIL coalition.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has been touring the Middle East since Thursday to rally support for the fight against extremists in Iraq and Syria.

On Saturday, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani cast doubt over Washington’s decision, saying such a move is to distract attention from its past record of arming rebels in Syria.

“The US seeks to continue unilateralism and to violate sovereignty of countries under the pretext of fighting terrorism,” he said.
