Iran Attaches Great Importance to Stability in Iraq, FM Zarif Says

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Stability in Iraq and the promotion of Tehran-Baghdad relations are highly important to Iran, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

“Stability and security in Iraq and its development and progress as well as the promotion of ties between Tehran and Baghdad in all areas have high strategic importance to the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Zarif said during a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General Special Representative for Iraq Nickolay Mladenov.

During recent developments in Iraq and while other countries were preparing to hold a show conference to pretend that they are fighting terrorists, Iran was seriously supporting the Iraqi people and government in their fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group, Zarif said.

The Iranian foreign minister also emphasized the necessity for continued cooperation and consultation among regional countries to resolve Iraq’s problems and repel the threat of terrorism in the country.

During the meeting, Mladenov commented on the complicated situation in Iraq and said any foreign intervention in the country would deteriorate the situation.

He also emphasized the need to meet the Iraqi people’s demands and help resolve the country’s crisis through more effective interaction among all countries.

The ISIL is a militant group in Iraq and Syria believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries. The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.
