Iran Dismisses UN Human Rights Report as Unfair
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham called the recent report by the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, “far from reality” and stressed that the report lacks legal basis.
"The report is one-sided and far from reality and has been produced without observing regulations relating to the responsibilities of UN Human Rights Council agents and lacks the necessary legal basis," Afkham told reporters in her weekly press conference in Tehran on Wednesday.
It seems that a political will beyond the UN human rights mechanisms has been involved in producing the report, she said, adding that the Islamic Republic sees Shaheed's performance as “unfair and unscientific” because he failed to adhere to the principles and regulations of international law.
She went on to say that like previous reports, the rapporteur has offered an incorrect interpretation of the judicial process in Iran due to his lack of knowledge about the country’s legal system.
The foreign ministry spokeswoman also emphasized that the Islamic Republic is well aware of its national and international commitments on human rights and has always had good cooperation with international bodies in this regard.
In June 2011, the UN Human Rights Council, under pressure from the United States and its allies, named former Maldivian foreign minister, Ahmed Shaheed, as human rights rapporteur on Iran.
Tehran insists that the appointment of a UN special rapporteur on Iran’s human rights situation is a selective, politically-motivated and unacceptable move.
