West’s Irresponsible Behavior behind Syria’s Protracted Conflict: Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian security official blamed the prolonged crisis in Syria on the irresponsible behavior of certain Western and regional countries.

“Despite the Syrian government’s readiness for political talks with different Syrian groups, the irresponsible behavior of certain Western and regional countries, arming the opposition and provoking them to kill people have been the main obstacles to the establishment of security and stability in Syria,” Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said.

He made the remarks in a meeting with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, here in Tehran on Monday.

The Iranian official also warned the sponsors of terrorist groups that their plans will eventually backfire.

“Today, we emphasize again that creation of a terrorist group to rein in the previous groups or the trans-regional forces’ military interference would aggravate the crisis,” Shamkhani explained.

He further voiced Tehran’s preparedness to contribute to regional security and counter-terrorism efforts in cooperation with the UN, which he described as the only legitimate body in that regard.

The UN official, for his part, urged the necessity to learn from Iran’s experience and tap into its potential for settling the crisis in Syria.
