Iran, Iraq Move Closer to Deep Ties in All Fields

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian and Iraqi officials agreed to hold the next high joint commission in Baghdad within months as part of efforts to expand bilateral cooperation.

Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri and Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi issued a joint press statement following the Iraqi premier’s recent trip to Tehran.

Abadi paid an official visit to Iran on Monday and met with several top officials, including Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani, during his 3-day stay in the Islamic Republic.

According to the statement, Iranian and Iraqi officials have emphasized on the “strategic aspects” of Tehran-Baghdad relations on the basis of mutual respect and interests.

The two sides also expressed willingness to bolster relations at all levels in the political, economic, security and commercial fields, the statement added.

They have also agreed that the third meeting of Iran-Iraq high joint commission would be held in Baghdad in the coming months, it added.

According to the statement, the two sides have further emphasized the significance of regional stability, and deemed terrorism a threat to the global security. They have also called for concerted international efforts to counter the growing menace of terrorism.

Back on October 21 and in a meeting with Abadi, Jahangiri had made assurances that Tehran will fully support Baghdad in the fight against terrorist groups.

“I guarantee that the Islamic Republic of Iran, with all its power, will stand by the great nation of Iraq,” the Iranian official stressed.
