AEOI Chief Visits Iran’s Nuclear Waste Repository

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Chief of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi paid a visit to a long-term nuclear waste storage facility in the central province of Isfahan.

Salehi visited the city of Anarak on Tuesday to get update on the latest developments regarding the construction of the nuclear waste stabiliztion and storage facility.

During his visit, Salehi highlighted the significance of nuclear waste processing techniques, describing it as the “most important chain in the nuclear fuel cycle” that should be handled with utmost care to preserve the environment.

Iran has launched extensive technical cooperation with the international organizations in the field of nuclear waste management, he added.

According to Salehi, the nuclear waste repository in Anarak has been set up following 8 years of studies and assessment of various locations in the country.

Radioactive or nuclear waste is a byproduct from nuclear reactors, fuel processing plants, and institutions such as hospitals and research facilities.

Earlier on Monday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif paid a visit to the country’s uranium enrichment facilities in Fordo and Natanz.

The top diplomat was also accompanied by a team of negotiators engaged in nuclear talks with six world powers.
