Iran’s Velayati, China’s Nuclear Negotiator Meet in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council Ali Akbar Veleyati held a meeting with China’s representative in the nuclear talks with Iran on Tuesday.

Wang Qun, who also serves as director general of the department of arms control at China's Foreign Ministry, met with Velayati at the office of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council in Tehran.

At the meeting, Velayati deplored the double-standard behavior practiced by some countries during nuclear talks, and said these countries were after imposing pressure on Iran.

He added that efforts should be made to advance nuclear talks within a proper framework.

As regards ties with China, Velayati, who is also former Iranian foreign minister, said there are no restrictions on the two countries’ ties.

China is a member of the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) which is in talks with Tehran to iron out differences and secure an agreement that would end the West’s 12-year-old standoff on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.

On November 24, 2013, Iran and the G5+1 signed an interim nuclear deal in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Based on the interim deal, the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran’s decision to freeze parts of its nuclear activities.

In July, Tehran and the six countries agreed to extend negotiations until November 24 in the hope of clinching a final deal.
