NAM Urges US to End Cuba Embargo

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s caretaker ambassador to the UN, on behalf of the 120-nation bloc of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), called on the US to end its decades-long economic embargo against Cuba.

In a Tuesday address to the United Nations General Assembly, Iran’s Ambassador Gholam Hossein Dehqani expressed the NAM’s “strong opposition to the unilateral and oppressive measures” adopted by the US against Cuba, saying decades of American embargo have caused great harm to the people of Cuba.

“Such unilateral US measures are also deemed violation of the rights and legitimate interests of the Cuban citizens and nationals from other countries,” Dehqani added.

“Once again, NAM calls on the US to give in to the unanimous will of the majority of the international community and to revise its failed policies by complying with the whole UN General Assembly’s resolutions urging an immediate end to the entire sanctions against Cuba,” he noted.

On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly for the 23rd time to condemn the US embargo against Cuba.

In the 193-nation assembly, 188 countries voted for the non-binding resolution, titled "Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba."

As in previous years, the only sides that voted against the declaration were the US and an its ally, Israel. The Pacific island nations Palau, Marshall Islands and Micronesia abstained. The voting result was identical to last year's.

Washington broke diplomatic ties and imposed a comprehensive trade embargo on Cuba more than half a century ago during the Cold War.
