VP Calls for Closer Iran-Afghanistan Ties
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian first vice president on Wednesday congratulated Abdullah Abdullah on his appointment as the new chief executive of Afghanistan, and called for closer relations between the two neighboring countries.
In a message to Abdullah, Eshaq Jahangiri described Tehran-Kabul relations as “brotherly”, and expressed the hope that the two countries would further promote ties in all spheres through utilizing the deep-rooted and age-old commonalities as well as the principle of good neighborliness.
In a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Kabul Mohammad Reza Bahrami earlier this week, Abdullah had appreciated Iran’s support for his country and said the Afghan government is willing to expand cooperation with Tehran.
“Afghanistan is committed to preserving and strengthening ties with Iran and hopes that the Islamic Republic will promote the relations with Kabul in all arenas,” he said at the time.
The Iranian ambassador, for his part, emphasized that Tehran welcomes the formation of a unity government as well as the establishment of peace and security in the country.
During the meeting, Bahrami also discussed the issue of Afghan refugees in Iran and called for closer cooperation between the two countries to resolve their problems.
