UN Deputy Chief Hails Iran’s Role in Region

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The United Nations’ Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliason said Iran can play an important role in dealing with crises in the region.

Speaking in a Thursday meeting with Ali Akbar Velayati, director of the Strategic Research Center of Iran’s Expediency Council, Eliason referred to instabilities in countries like Syria, Iraq and Lebanon and underlined Tehran’s role in confronting regional crises.

He described Iran as an important and stable country and expressed the hope to witness stability in the region with Tehran’s cooperation.

The UN official reiterated that the crisis in the region should be tackled through the cooperation of the region’s countries.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Eliason referred to the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) as a threat to all countries in the world and called for a serious and responsible approach in confrontation with the terrorist group.

Eliason is in Tehran holding meetings with Iranian officials to discuss major regional issues including ISIL, and the war in Syria.
