FM Zarif Briefs Iranian MPs on Nuclear Talks
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran’s foreign minister and top nuclear negotiator Mohammad Javad Zarif participated in a closed parliamentary session on Saturday less than a week after the latest round of nuclear talks in Vienna, Austria.
Iranian MP Ismaeel Jalili told the Tasnim News Agency about the session that Zarif briefed Iranian lawmakers on the latest round of nuclear talks between Tehran and six world powers.
The marathon talks were extended at the request of the members of the Group 5+1, which includes the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany, Zarif told the Iranian lawmakers.
Earlier this week, top diplomats from Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany decided to extend talks on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program for more seven months.
A fresh round of talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 were held ahead of the self-imposed deadline of November 24.
On November 24, 2013, the two sides signed an interim nuclear deal in the Swiss city of Geneva.
The Geneva deal (the Joint Plan of Action) came into effect in January and expired in July, when the parties decided to extend negotiations until November 24 in the hope of clinching a final deal that would end a decade of impasse over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear energy program.
