MP: US Unable to Exert Influence over Iran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A top Iranian lawmaker stressed that the US will not be able to use the “cruel” anti-Iran sanctions or the talks on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program as leverage to pile up pressure on the Islamic Republic.
Addressing an open session of the parliament on Sunday, Gholamali Haddad Adel, a former speaker of the Iranian parliament, said the Iranian nation will never allow American politicians to wield influence in the country's political affairs, like what they did before the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
He also made a reference to the nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers, and reiterating that Washington could never have a bearing on the next parliamentary election in Iran by resorting to “intimidation, allurement" or the extension of the talks.
“We trust our team of (nuclear) negotiators and are confident that they will never bargain with the enemies over the national interests,” the MP announced.
The latest round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany) was held in Vienna, Austria, ahead of the self-imposed deadline of November 24.
The two sides decided to extend the marathon talks for seven more months.
Iran and the sextet signed an interim nuclear deal on November 24, 2013, in the Swiss city of Geneva.
The Geneva deal (the Joint Plan of Action) came into effect in January and expired in July, when the parties decided to extend negotiations until November 24 in the hope of clinching a final deal that would end a decade of impasse over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear energy program.
