Envoy Slams Anti-Iran UN Resolution as “Political”

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran dismissed as “political, unbalanced, and full of prejudices” a recent United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution on alleged violations of human rights in the country.

"The resolution approved at UNGA has been drafted by a country whose leaders have remained silent over human rights violations in recent years, especially the slaughter of innocent Palestinians by the Zionist regime of Israel," Iran’s Deputy Ambassador to the UN Gholam Hossein Dehqani said following the approval of a new anti-Iran resolution at UNGA on Thursday.

He said the attitude shows that these countries are using the issue of human rights as a tool to fulfill their political objectives.

Dehqani further underscored that the resolution has failed to provide an image consistent with realities of the Iranian society, saying that it has also ignored positive developments of human rights conditions in Iran, specially during President Hassan Rouhani's administration.

The Iranian ambassador also said Tehran has demonstrated its determination to cooperate with the UN-UPR (Universal Periodic Review), which periodically examines the human rights performance of all UN member states.

The UNGA approved the resolution based on a recent report by UN Human Rights Rapporteur on Iran Ahmed Shaheed.

In June 2011, the UN Human Rights Council, under pressure from the US and its allies, named former Maldivian foreign minister, Ahmed Shaheed, as human rights rapporteur on Iran.

Tehran insists that the appointment of a UN special rapporteur on Iran's human rights situation is a selective, politically-motivated, and unacceptable move aimed at promoting Iranophobia and Islamophobia.
