German Company Keen to Invest in Iran's Solar Farm: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A German company has voiced its willingness to invest $1 billion in the construction of solar farms in Iran, an Iranian energy official announced on Friday.

Iran’s Deputy Minister of Energy for International Affairs Esmaeil Mahsooli told the Tasnim News Agency that some German private companies have recently voiced their readiness to invest in new energies, especially solar energy, in Iran.

“One of the German companies has made an offer as high as $1 billion, but it has accepted to invest this money in Iran in partnership with some Iranian companies,” Mahsooli said, adding that all offers are under consideration in the Ministry of Energy and New Energies Organization.

“Offers made by the German private companies to build solar farms in Iran has several financial, monetary, and technical aspects which should be considered,” he added.

The Iranian official also pointed to nuclear talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five UNSC permanent members plus Germany) and stressed that a comprehensive nuclear deal can positively influence investments in Iran.

Once the sanctions are lifted, Germany and many other European countries will highly welcome the investment opportunities in Iran and this will accelerate the process to operationalize the offers, Mahsooli predicted.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) have decided to extend for more 7 months a self-imposed deadline for signing a comprehensive nuclear agreement.

The latest round of talks on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program was wrapped up on December 17 in the Swiss Geneva, and the next round is due to be held in late January 2015.

The negotiations aim to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.
