Cleric Decries Divisive Moves in Islamic World

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian cleric renewed the call for a unified Islamic community, and lashed out at certain regional states for inciting division among the Muslims.

“Unfortunately, certain regional countries, such as Saudi Arabia, not only fail to do anything for unity , but are pushing for division and rift among the Muslims,” Grand Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani said on Monday.

The top cleric made the comments in a meeting with a group of Iranian Sunni lawmakers in the city of Qom on the occasion of the Unity Week, which marks the auspicious birth anniversary of the Prophet of Islam, based on the Shiite and the Sunni schools of thought.

Criticizing the Saudi rulers for working hand in glove with the enemies of Islam, Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani said Riyadh had even provided financial support for the Zionists in the Israeli war on Gaza.

He further lauded the high level of unity among the Iranian Shiite and Sunni Muslims, calling on Muslims to close ranks against the enemies.

In relevant remarks in October 2014, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei described the unity among the Muslim nations as Iran’s "official policy," warning that the enemies of the Islamic Ummah plot to create a rift between Iran and the Islamic world.

“Unity and fraternity among the Muslims is one of our religious principles and the Islamic Republic has been straightforward in this regard,” the Leader had stated.
