Iran Ready to Form Regional Safety Convention: AEOI Chief
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi called for the formation of a regional convention on the safety of power plant activities.
“We are ready to set up a regional safety convention that monitors the (power) plant activities of the surrounding countries,” Salehi stressed on Saturday after signing a radioecology Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Department of Environment.
Referring to the tendency of neighboring countries to start their nuclear activities, he went on to say that the activities can be constantly monitored and controlled based on the framework of such regional safety convention.
“Neighboring countries, the Persian Gulf littoral states in particular, have entered the field of peaceful nuclear activities,” the Iranian official explained, saying that the UAE is constructing four nuclear plants and other countries have also voiced their willingness to build such facilities.
