Iran, Syria Confer about Diplomatic Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Deputy FM Seyed Abbas Araqchi discussed with his Syrian counterpart the mutual cooperation between Tehran and Damascus in international organizations.

In a Wednesday meeting, the visiting Syrian Deputy FM Faisal Mekdad and the Iranian official exchaned views on the latest status of Tehrn-Damascus cooperation in the Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

A WMD-free Middle East was among the issues discussed in the talks between Mekdad and Araqchi.

The two sides underscored the necessity for continued diplomatic consultations and close contacts between the delegations of both countries in New York, Hague, and Geneva, in a bid to coordinate their stances in international organizations.

The Syrian official also held a meeting with senior Iranian MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi. During the meeting, Mekdad had said that Iran-Syria "strategic relations" will leave effective impact on regional and global equations.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with the terrorists of Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.
