Sacred Defense Entrenched Iran's Position, Deterrence: Ministry

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Ministry of Defense said the country's great deterrent and defense power and its regional clout are the outstanding achievements of the Sacred Defense, a term used to refer to the Iraqi imposed war on Iran.

Consolidation of Iran’s defensive deterrent power and its dominant position in the region are among the remarkable achievements of the Sacred Defense, Iranian Defense Ministry said in a statement published to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the onset of the Iraqi war against the country (1980-1988).

The statement also described the Sacred Defense as a momentous event that paved the way for Iranian experts to make scientific accomplishments and acquire the state-of-the-art technology in strategic fields.

In Iran, the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war is known as the Sacred Defense, and Sacred Defense Week is held on the anniversary of the beginning of the war.

Sacred Defense Week begins on Shahrivar 31 in the Iranian calendar (September 22 this year), which is the day Iraq invaded Iran and began the imposed war on the country in 1980.

Each year, various units of the Iranian Army, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Iran’s Armed Forces, and the Islamic Republic of Iran Police participate in nationwide military parades to mark the event.
