Iran Marks 25th Passing Anniversary of Imam Khomeini


TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranians are commemorating the 25th anniversary of the passing of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini (RA).

Special ceremonies are underway at the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini (RA) in southern Tehran.

Pilgrims from across the country, as well as high-ranking Iranian officials along with groups of foreign guests and ambassadors are taking part in the ceremony.

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei is addressing the huge gathering.

Every year, large crowds of Iranians from across the country travel to Tehran to attend a commemoration ceremony at Imam Khomeini’s shrine to pay tribute to the late founder of the Islamic Republic.

Ayatollah Rouhollah Moussavi Khomeini, better known as Imam Khomeini, spearheaded Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to the overthrow of the US-backed Shah of Iran.

Imam Khomeini passed away on June 3, 1989 at the age of 87.
