Iran: Syria to Witness New Phase of Stability after Election


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian foreign ministry, in a statement on Wednesday, praised the high turnout of voters in the presidential election in Syria, saying the vote promises start of a new phase of stability and national unity in the country.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the election in Syria and its result as a legitimate right and a domestic decision,” the ministry statement said.

The statement also emphasized the importance of respecting the choice of the Syrian people “as the sole decision-makers of their political destiny.”

“Undoubtedly, this election, which was held with a competitive approach and within the framework of democratic standards, promises a new phase of stability and national reconciliation in the country,” the statement said.

The ministry also expressed the hope that the election would strengthen the reconciliation process in Syria, serve the Syrian people’s interests, put an end to the country’s crisis and restore peace and tranquility.

On Tuesday, the Syrian people went to the polls across the government-controlled areas of the country to elect the next president for a seven-year term.

The Interior Ministry said there were 15.8 million eligible voters, both inside and outside Syria, and that 9,600 voting centers had been set up around the country.
