Zarif: US Should Make Political Decision on Iran Nuclear Case

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said policy makers of six world powers, especially those in the White House, have to make a political decision on how to pave the way for a final accord on Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

Zarif made the comments following three separate meetings with US Secretary of State John Kerry in the Austrian capital of Vienna over the past two days.

“We had good exchange of views and need serious discussions at the level of political directors” said the Iranian foreign minister.

“Particularly in Washington” he added “they need to take a political decision on what solution is available and which solution prepares the ground for the (comprehensive) agreement.”

Iran has focused efforts to “break a deadlock that has been based on an illogical framework,” Zarif underlined.

He noted that Iran tries to reach what has been agreed upon in an interim deal it signed with the world powers back in November 2013.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) on November 24, 2013, clinched an interim nuclear deal in the Swiss city of Geneva.

The breakthrough agreement (the Joint Plan of Action), which has come into effect since January 20, stipulates that over the course of six months, Iran and the six countries will draw up a comprehensive nuclear deal which will lead to a lifting of the whole sanctions on Iran.

As the July 20 deadline for striking the long-awaited, final nuclear deal is looming, representatives from Iran and the sextet are engaged in intensive high-profile talks in Vienna to resolve the standoff on Iran’s nuclear program once and for all.
