Singapore Stresses Iran’s Regional, Int’l Significance


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Singaporean parliament speaker expressed her country’s enthusiasm for closer ties with Iran, which she hailed as an influential country in the region and the world.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the influential countries in the region and the world, is seriously cared about by Singapore’s political and parliamentary officials,” Halimah Yacob said in a meeting with a delegation of Iranian lawmakers, held in Singapore on Tuesday.

She also called for the enhancement of ties between Tehran and Singapore City in diverse fields.

For his part, head of the Iranian delegation said the two countries have considerable potential they can exploit to broaden bilateral ties in various arenas.

Gholam Reza Mesbahi Moqaddam, who also chairs Iran-Singapore parliamentary friendship group, said Iran’s foreign policy is based on de-escalation and Tehran seeks closer ties with other countries, particularly with its old friends.

The Iranian team left Tehran for Singapore on Sunday as part of efforts to explore avenues for closer bilateral ties with the Southeastern Asian country.

Back in June, the Singaporean parliament speaker had paid on official visit to Iran.
