Takfiris Trying to Tarnish True Image of Islam: Iranian Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Takfiri terrorists are trying to tarnish the true image of Islam, a senior Iranian security official said, deploring Friday’s mortar attack near the Iraqi holy city of Karbala.

“Terrorist acts are against the spirit of true Islam and have no place in any divine religion,” Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said on Friday.

He called on the world countries to stand against such brutal acts.

Shamkhani stressed that these attacks are orchestrated by terrorists and those affiliated with the international Zionism.

The Iranian official also expressed the confidence that sustainable security would be restored to Iraq and the war-torn country would be free from Takfiri militants through national cooperation and unity among Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

His comment came as a barrage of mortar shells killed one person and injured four on the western side of Karbala, Iraq. According to the police official, the victims were residents and not pilgrims.

Shiite pilgrims are in Iraqi holy city of Karbala to attend the mourning ceremony of Arbaeen. The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to Karbala, where the holy tomb is located.
