Iranian Academics Call for UN Arms Embargo on States Attacking Yemen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – More than 8,000 Iranian academics in a letter released on Sunday urged the United Nations to impose an arms embargo on the countries participating in the Saudi-led war on Yemen, which has killed hundreds of women and children in the Arab country so far.

In the letter to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, 8,245 Iranian university teachers asked the UN chief to help end aggressions against Yemen and urged the international community to impose arms sanctions on the members of the Saudi-led coalition.

The academics also emphasized that a broad range of war crimes, including "crimes against humanity" and "genocide" have been committed by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.

They called for the officials and military commanders who have had a hand in the crimes to be brought to justice.

The university teachers further asked Ban Ki-moon to stress the necessity for immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to the Yemeni people by all international relief organizations.

In the letter, they also called on Ban to declare the attack on the independent state of Yemen as an act of aggression by the Saudi regime and its allies.

On March 26, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies began to launch deadly air strikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

The Saudi-led coalition announced on April 21 that its military operation "Decisive Storm" has ended, but hours later, air strikes and ground fighting resumed.

According to the spokesman of the Yemeni Army, the Saudi-led war on the Arab country has killed more than 2,000 people, most of them civilians.
