Iranian MP Seeking to Invite Amano to Parliament’s Commission on JCPOA

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Iranian Parliament’s Special Commission for Reviewing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has officially asked the country’s foreign minister to invite UN nuclear agency chief to attend a commission session.

In his letter to Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is also Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Alireza Zakani asked for the foreign ministry’s official invitation to Yukiya Amano.

Pointing to the upcoming visit to Iran by Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Zakani said the commission is prepared - in coordination with government - to host Amano in a bid to highlight Iranian nation’s sensitivity about the IAEA’s performance, inspections and vital responsibilities.

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi had earlier announced that Amano will pay a visit to Iran within the next few days.

Salehi and Amano met on the sidelines of the 59th Annual Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference, held in Vienna on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Salehi said Amano is going to visit Iran in the next three or four days, adding that he and Amano have discussed Iran’s past and present nuclear activities in the meeting.

Earlier, Amano had told the IAEA conference that Iran’s additional transparency measures will help his agency get better understanding of the country’s nuclear program.

Iran and the UN nuclear agency on July 14 signed a roadmap in Vienna to resolve all the past and present outstanding issues related to Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

On the same day, Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) also finalized the text of the JCPOA, a lasting deal that would end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The IAEA has been given the role of verifying Iran’s commitments under the deal.

According the JCPOA, “The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be requested to monitor and verify the voluntary nuclear-related measures as detailed in this JCPOA. The IAEA will be requested to provide regular updates to the Board of Governors, and as provided for in this JCPOA, to the UN Security Council. All relevant rules and regulations of the IAEA with regard to the protection of information will be fully observed by all parties involved.”
