Iran to Continue Supporting Syria, Speaker Larijani Says

Speaking at a meeting with Syria’s Envoy to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud in Tehran on Wednesday, Larijani said Iran's support for the Syrian people is “based on a religious and moral duty.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue supporting Syria and believes that in a new political strategy and mechanism, the Syrian leaders should be given the chance to resolve their domestic problems and overcome terrorists,” Larijani noted.

He also lauded the resistance shown by the people and leaders of Syria to the terrorists.

The Syrian diplomat, for his part, briefed Larijani on the current developments in his country.

Denouncing the crimes committed by Takfiri extremist groups, Mahmoud said the main priority of the international community should be campaign against terrorism.

Syria has been gripped with civil war since March 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 220,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.

A senior Iranian official announced on Tuesday that the country’s proposal to end the ongoing crisis in Syria will start to be implemented after consultations with Russia in the near future.
