UN, Iranian Officials Discuss Initiatives to Resolve Crises in Yemen, Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian and UN Undersecretary General Jan Eliasson exchange views on the latest efforts to resolve ongoing crises in Yemen, Syria.

At the meeting held in Tehran on Monday, Amir Abdollahian referred to UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura's initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis, and said any initiative which includes a realistic approach and major comprising factors such as the Syrian nation, leadership, and serious campaign against terrorism would be more practical and comprehensive.

As regards Yemen, he said Iran is currently engaged in negotiations with the UN envoy for Yemen affairs.

“We support negotiations among Yemeni sides,” he noted.

Eliasson, too, stressed the need for pursuing diplomatic initiatives to resolve the regional crises.

Eliasson also appreciated Tehran's constructive approach in interacting effectively with the UN representatives on Syria and Yemen.

The top UN official asked for increased efforts for pursuing a political solution among all Yemeni sides and the start of talks in the Arab country.
