Minister: Iran Has Released 9 Indian Sailors

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Nine Indian sailors who were in jail in Iran on charges of smuggling have been released, Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said Wednesday.

"Iran has released nine Indian sailors - Thank you Iran. Thank you (Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad) Javad Zarif for a prompt action on our request," Swaraj tweeted, The Times of India reported today.

"We have secured the release of Sushil Kapoor and 8 Indians from jail in Iran. They will reach Delhi tomorrow," she said.

The sailors were released two months after the Indian external affairs minister met Zarif in New Delhi and requested for the release of the Indians who were in prison in Iran for two years on charges of smuggling oil.
