TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian army has taken control over a part of a highway connecting the city of Homs and Damascus from ISIL militants, a military source said Monday.

According to the source, the Syrian army aims to liberate the remaining 10 kilometers (over 6 miles) of the road, currently still under ISIL control.

"Now we are in control of Damascus-Homs highway between the capital and [the city of] Harasta," Sputnik News cited the source as telling RIA Novosti.

That stretch of road is being blocked by ISIL militants and travelers between Homs and Damascus must take an alternative route.

The eastern cities of Harasta, Jobar and Douma remain under the control of an estimated 7,000 terrorists. The Syrian army is conducting attacks on militant targets in the outskirts of Harasta and Jobar.
