Adviser to Syrian Minister Lauds Iran’s Role in Vienna Talks
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior political adviser to Syria’s information minister praised Iran’s role in recent international talks in the Austrian capital of Vienna on the Syrian conflict, saying that the Islamic Republic’s presence in the meeting was constructive.
“It can be said that the holding of the session, by itself, in its current way and the participation of all major regional and international countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the meeting will have numerous positive effects on regional decision-making,” Ali Abdullah Ahmed said in an interview with the Tasnim News Agency on Friday.
“Iran, Russia and Syria’s (other) allies managed to impose a new approach on the world to deal with the Syrian crisis,” he stated.
Neither Saudis nor Americans could overlook the necessity of Iran’s presence in the Vienna talks, the top adviser said, adding that the issue is indicative of a “change in international equilibriums.”
Iran attended the Vienna talks following a shift in Western countries’ policies towards Tehran’s regional role.
US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday stressed that a diplomatic solution to Syrian crisis is impossible without Iran.
In a joint statement after the talks in Austria on Friday, Iran, the US, Russia and 14 other powers called for a nationwide truce in Syria’s more than four-year-old conflict.
The participants also called for renewals of stalled UN-brokered talks between the government and opposition and fresh elections.
