Syrian Army Repels ISIL Attack on Military Airport in Deir Ezzor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian army troops repulsed a heavy attack by ISIL terrorists on a military airport in Deir Ezzor in the eastern part of the Arab country, killing dozens of the foreign-backed militants, media reports said.

After heavy clashes with the ISIL militants, the army forces managed to repel their attack, which targeted a military base near Syria’s border with Iraq, and kill 30 terrorists in the district.

Backed by the Syrian fighter jets’ airstrikes, the troops also advanced in ISIL-held areas near the military airport and recaptured a district from the militants, the Arabic-language Al-Ahed news website reported.

Terrorists have suffered heavy losses in these areas with dozens of them injured and their weapons seized by the army forces.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including the ISIL, currently controlling parts of it.

Meanwhile, Russia’s recent aerial support for the Syrian forces has given fresh impetus to the fight against the foreign-backed terrorists.

Since late September, Russia has been carrying out bombings against the ISIL terrorists in Syria, after Russia's parliament granted President Putin authorization to deploy the country's air force abroad.

In the past four and a half years, more than 250,000 people have died in Syria -overwhelmingly civilians- and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Around 8 million others have been displaced internally.
