Nothing New in Amano’s Report on Iran’s Nuclear Program: Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) referred to a recent report by the IAEA Chief on Tehran’s nuclear energy program, particularly on its so-called PMD (possible military dimension) case, saying there was nothing new in Yukiya Amano’s Thursday comments.

IAEA Director General Amano in an introductory statement to the Board of Governors claimed the Agency is not in a position to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran, and therefore to conclude that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities.

In reaction, Iran’s envoy to IAEA Reza Najafi said the stance held by Amano is the same for all countries that do not implement the Additional Protocol.

For such countries, the IAEA cannot provide assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear sites and announce that all nuclear activities there are aimed at peaceful purposes, Najafi added.

“This is even the case for such a country as Switzerland, which has been implementing the Additional Protocol for almost 10 years,” the Iranian envoy added.

An overview of the Agency’s annual report in 2014 indicates that Switzerland is still without the “broader conclusion”, he noted.

He reiterated that what Amano said is not new, and the Agency has been reporting such remarks on Iran for years.

Amano is planned to release a report on the Iranian nuclear program, including the PMD issue, next week, and the Agency’s Board of Governors will review the report and make a final decision in a meeting on December 15.

“The Agency has continued its monitoring and verification activities in relation to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the text of a nuclear accord finalized by Iran and world powers on July 14. October 18th was Adoption Day for the nuclear deal. On the same day, Iran informed the Agency that, effective on Implementation Day, it will provisionally apply its Additional Protocol and fully implement the modified Code 3.1," Amano reported on Thursday.

"The Agency is conducting preparatory activities related to the verification and monitoring of Iran’s nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA, including verification and monitoring of the steps Iran has begun taking towards the implementation of those commitments. The activities set out in the Road-map between Iran and the Agency for the period to October 15th were completed on schedule. A wrap-up technical meeting took place between Iran and the Agency on November 24th," he added.

“Next week, I expect to provide my final assessment on all past and present outstanding issues, as set out in my report of November 2011, for action by the Board,” he said.
