Although the foreign ministry understands the “pure emotions of the Muslim people of our country”, it calls for prevention of any kind of rally in front of the Saudi Arabian diplomatic buildings in Tehran and Mashahd, Jaberi Ansari said in a statement on Sunday.
He made the remarks after a number of protesters staged a rally in front of the Saudi embassy in Tehran to condemn Riyadh for executing prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.
The rally turned violent when protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails at the embassy and clashed with police.
Saudi Arabia executed 47 prisoners on Saturday, including Sheikh Nimr, the Arab country’s interior ministry said in a statement.
The cleric’s name was among a list of the 47 carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.
Sheikh Nimr had been detained in July 2012 on charges of delivering anti-regime speeches and defending political prisoners.
The move by the Riyadh regime has drawn worldwide condemnation.
On Sunday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei denounced the execution and described it as a “political mistake”.
“The oppressed cleric (Sheikh Nimr) neither encouraged people to take armed action nor had been involved in covert conspiracy,” the Leader noted, stressing that Sheikh Nimr was only an outspoken critic that pursued “promotion of virtue and prevention of vice”.
